Threat To My Life By Eze Cletus Ilomuanya

May 3, 2010

In an apparent continuation of the plans by agents of Imo State government to permanently silence the opposition, on the night of April 29, 2010 at about 11:06 pm, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya an influential traditional ruler and chairman of Imo State and South East council of traditional rulers called my phone repeatedly for over five times and I did not pick up. When I eventually called him back, he immediately accused me of writing a petition against him, which he purportedly said he was reading on the internet.

I denied writing any petition against him. I however told him that recently, some agents of the state government comprising security adviser to the governor Chief George Egu and others, stormed my office in Owerri with over 50 armed mobile policemen and over 100 armed civilians who are members of the state vigilante group set up by the governor. That these people destroyed my printing press and campaign headquarters and carried away a lot of customers printed materials and our staff salaries, vandalized my equipment and abducted 7 members of my staff who they took to the government house. I also said to him that I was reliably and verifiably informed that he was one of the people present at the government house when my staff were brought in there and dehumanized. This we stated to buttress the facts stated in our petition. Eze Ilomuanya at this point denied being present and started calling me all sorts of names. He went ahead to threaten to destroy me, my family and staff and that he will deal with me. He said I know him and what he can do and that I should wait and see how he destroys my “bastard staff” and me. Ilomuanya went ahead to say that we are “a stupid and useless opposition to Imo overnment” and that he will not spare me. I interpret this to mean that he is plotting to kill me or kidnap me. I have alerted all security agencies and media in the country and all over the world. I have also officially petitioned them including the state traditional rulers, my community leaders and Ezes in Obowo, the religious leaders and political leaders of Imo state and Nigeria etc.

I am taking this death threat very very serious in view of the current volatile security and political situation in the state and country and the caliber of the person making the threat and his boast. I refuse to be cowed by any such threats and I am committed to the ideals of defending our people, developing our state and nation and indeed promoting the ideals of accountability in governance no matter whose ox is gored. Eze Ilomuanya boldly called me with his number that I know of and have had for several years 08033251306. Though I fear no evil, If anything happens to me, any member of my family or staff, whether death, kidnap, accident, sickness or anything whatsoever, the whole world knows who is responsible…those threatening me should beware.
