Sambo is new VP, National Assembly confirms

May 17, 2010
Image removed. The National Assembly today in Abuja confirmed the nomination of former Kaduna State governor, Namadi Sambo, as Nigeria’s new vice-president.  He was nominated last week by President Goodluck Jonathan. Our reporter says that while the nomination went without a hitch in the Senate, it was contentious in the House of Representatives, where members, who were confused about the proper procedure, argued loudly, with some of them singing raucously.
Mr. Sambo was a surprise choice for Mr. Jonathan, as he was not on the radar in the weeks leading to his nomination.  He is, however, known to be the beneficiary of the insistence of the Governor’s Forum that one of them be nominated by the President.

Mr. Sambo is also known to be a political ally of the reviled former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, who has said he wants to be the next president.
