Peoples Parliament To Hold 2nd Session In New York

June 6, 2010
The Nigeria Peoples’ Parliament in Diaspora (NPPID) reconvenes in New York on Saturday, June 12, with a reminder to Nigeria nationals of the historic symbolism and political significance of that date.
“The June 12th 1993 presidential election is a watershed in the annals of our nation's quest for constitutional governance,” it said in a press statement, noting that Nigeria been held down since that time by the military government’s annulment of that election.

“At this critical stage in the struggle to achieve genuine democracy as well as meaningful economic and social development in Nigeria, we are not giving up on our country and in the continuous struggle to ensure that democratic rule is  entrenched; the peoples' right to choose who to govern them, freedom, justice and equity and their ability to realize their legitimate economic aspirations and a country whose potentials for greatness are developed, Nigerians would converge under the auspices of the Nigeria Peoples' Parliament in Diaspora (NPPID) to hold the 2nd parliamentary session on Saturday June 12th 2010 at the Bailey Theatre of the LaGuardia Crowne Plaza in New York,” the organization said.

Participants will be able to watch Nigeria’s first match in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, against Argentina, on television sets at the venue before the commencement of the parliamentary session.

NIGERIA PEOPLES' PARLIAMENT IN DIASPORA

June 12th 1993; Seventeen Years After & Nigeria's Search for a True Democracy.

Seventeen years ago after a long siege of military rule in Nigeria, Nigerians yearning for democratic rule, in large numbers approached the voting booths to exercise  their rights to vote in a presidential election. The election was
adjudged by local and international observers as free and fair. The standard and the general acceptability of the results of that election is yet to be replicated in Nigeria's subsequent elections.

However, due to the obvious shenanigans of the then military ruler-Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and his military cohorts, the results of that election was annulled. And the winner of the election Bashorun MKO Abiola was denied ascendancy to
power and subsequently died in government detention under mysterious circumstances. The rest as they say is history!

The June 12th 1993 presidential election is a watershed in the annals of our nation's quest for constitutional governance. The country has since been held down by the fallouts of this unfortunate action of the military. Ironically,
members of this military who actively took part in the ruins of Nigeria now occupy top political positions.

At this critical stage in the struggle to achieve genuine democracy as well as meaningful economic and social development in Nigeria, we are not giving up on our country and in the continuous struggle to ensure that democratic rule is  entrenched; the peoples' right to choose who to govern them, freedom, justice & equity and their ability to realize their legitimate
economic aspirations and a country whose potentials for greatness are developed, Nigerians would converge under the auspices of the Nigeria Peoples' Parliament in Diaspora (NPPID) to hold the 2nd parliamentary session on Saturday June 12th
2010 at the Bailey Theatre of the Laguardia Crowne Plaza in New York.

We have a duty to participate in the process of generating solutions to our country’s seemingly intractable problems. Please join other patriotic Nigerians at this session to examine a myriad of issues and proffer strategies for setting Nigeria on a course of sustained progress and democratic renewal.

So join Nigerians at this important gathering and be part of a movement for Change and Transformation of Nigeria.
