Where Can I Get News About Nigeria?

July 15, 2010

It’s 9: 00 pm and I quickly put on the television to watch NTA Network News. And for the next thirty minutes I am kept busy by one of Africa’s worst television networks. The news starts with President Goodluck Jonathan and by the time I put it off at 9.30pm it is still about President Jonathan Goodluck.

Image removed.
First it’s about an association that claims they will commit suicide if Jonathan is not allowed to run as President. Then there is some guy who says God has willed the presidency to Jonathan. Then followed by a piece on a state delegation to Jonathan pleading with him to consider doing exactly what was ordained for him from birth-run for President in 2011.At about 9.30pm I had to switch of the channel for this was sheer torture!   I flick to AIT and at least I get a semblance of what news should be. The station is clear. And there is an attempt to have proper discourse on television.   After a few minutes I switch on the internet to see if I can get some more news on Nigeria. Unfortunately most of the papers have gone to bed, so I can’t get live updates, I decide to google NTA’s website-WWW.NTA.COM.NG - unfortunately it does not exist. Africa’s largest television network has no website. Then surely FRCN must have a website. So I visit www. Radionigeriaonline.com and aha! There is a website, but there is a problem-there are only six items of news. But there is a link where I can listen to the radio online. I click on it and what I see is Kapital FM streaming.   I decide to sleep for I have to wake up early in the morning for an appointment. My business partners coming in from Germany could not get their visas on time. Because you have to apply for a Nigerian Visa online to the immigration authorities in Nigeria via http://www.immigration.gov.ng  .But there is one problem. The form on the website just does not work. It kept telling them their number was wrong. And because they didn’t know who to contact for a visa valuable time was lost. Their application has still not been dealt with.   So I proceed for the appointment all by myself, this is after travelling from New York.  Appointment goes well and I am asked to return with the technical partners whenever they are able to get a visa to Nigeria.   I return to my hotel room and once again I switch on the television and O my God it is Goodluck again. Goodluck, Goodluck, Goodluck-that’s the only news on NTA. Even in North Korea the state television sometimes has news about other events in a country where Kim Jong-Il is the sole event.   With no where else to get current news about Nigeria I turn to Saharareporters.com and what you get is amazing. You could read and read and read. Now I have no need for NTA or Radio Nigeria. I just visit saharareporters.com   What a shame-Africa’s largest television and radio networks cannot run a website.   I hope our rebranding minister is reading   I have included a few news websites for our Minister to see.   1. www.sabcnews.com/portal/site/SABCNews      2. www.modernghana.com/ghanahome     3. www.aljazeera.net   4. www.bbc.co.uk   5. www.cnn.com   For now in the day time I read the numerous Nigerian papers that abound on the internet. In the evenings I am glued to Saharareporters.com.   Nigeria, truly is the giant of Africa.     Raymond Igwe
