The launch of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG) in the UK was well attended by many pro Nigeria groups, journalists, politicians and distinguished Nigerians from Nigeria and Diaspora.
Amongst the pro Nigeria groups represented were Champions For Nigeria Organisation, Arise Nigeria, Unity and Positive Change In Nigeria, Women of Africa, Support Option A4 Group and Citizens For Change Global. BEN Television and SkyQuestCom, a multimedia production company, were also represented.
Champions For Nigeria Organisation (CFN) is a member of the SNG (UK). The UK Coordinator of CFN has been made one of the Interim Steering Committee members for the SNG (UK).
Pastor (Dr) Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly was the host. He was accompanied by his wife and children. Other executive members of the SNG (Nigeria) were also in attendance. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former Minister of FCT, was present and interacted extensively with delegates.
The zeal to make Nigeria an enviably habitable place was reflected in all the speeches at the event. Questions and answers were reflective of the determination of Nigerians at home and abroad to see a positive change from the status quo in Nigeria.
This event revealed the hunger of Nigerians in Diaspora to see a positive change in Nigeria. Dr Bakare implored Nigerians in Diaspora to get onboard to help produce a positive change in Nigeria. Most diaspora Nigerians who attended this event were professionals in their various field of learning including lawyers, medical doctors, researchers, teachers, IT professionals, politicians, journalists and broadcasters.
Throughout his speech and interaction at the event, Dr Tunde Bakare was very candid in his determination to see a progressive change in Nigeria. He exuded an attitude of a true statesman, approachable, open and a person of integrity. He also resolved to see the voice of the youths and women heard in the course of finding a lasting resolution to the ills of Nigeria polity.
As an active Pastor of Latter Rain Assembly, Dr Tunde Bakare stated, “we have prayed, we have fasted, it’s time to act.” Christians and non-Christians alike were encouraged to take action to support a positive change in Nigeria.
The main area for change is the electoral process; Nigerians should be given their voting mandate by the registration of voters on a valid, complete and useable register of voters. Dr Bakare and Mallam El-Rufai believe that the absence of a valid register of voters in Nigeria will not provide the requisite support for the electoral process. It will not be a surprise that the absence of a genuine register of voters points at another electoral failure in the making come 2011 in Nigeria.
Technology will play a key role in the electoral process in Nigeria. If technology is correctly adopted in the electoral process, vote rigging will be confined to history. But the corrupt leaders have not allowed technology solution in the electoral process in Nigeria because of the corrupt practices inherent in the Nigeria system. In a recent article in the Guardian Newspaper of 18 July 2010, Donald Duke reported the importance of adopting technology to support the electoral process to check corrupt practices.
