Letter To A Patriot

September 11, 2010

Dear Patriot: You, like majority of Nigerians, must be aware of the grave injustice we have been subjected to by the so called politicians of the Fourth Republic. They have pillaged our common wealth, and in the name of so called western democracy; they are throttling us.

Dear Patriot: You, like majority of Nigerians, must be aware of the grave injustice we have been subjected to by the so called politicians of the Fourth Republic. They have pillaged our common wealth, and in the name of so called western democracy; they are throttling us.

I know for a very long time you have been filled with great anger and worried about the direction these uncaring rascals are taking our country. My dear, Patriot, things cannot continue the way they are. I beg you in the name of God and for the sake of the majority of our country people; you must act now

When you enlisted in the army, you swore an oath to defend our country against invaders. My dear Patriot when you took that oath, it was not to help hold down Nigerians whilst politicians raped us. The country is under attack from within and the attackers are those we entrusted with political power. Governance is a social contract between the rulers and the citizens. The people give up their collective freedoms in return for protection and social justice. Whereas majority of the people  have kept their  own side of the social contract, the ruling class have abused and defecated on it.

My Patriot, everyday Nigerians are calling for a revolution which is nothing but a reflection of the frustration they feel. Revolution has been described as “an overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed”, it, often times, is accompanied by violence and examples that come to mind are those of France, China or Ghana under Rawlings.

Many Nigerians, me included, are quick to hold up the present Chinese model as one we should emulate without taking cognisance of the sacrifices they made to get where they are today.  When the Red revolution started in China, it was at a great personal cost to most of the leaders, Party members had to sell their children to raise money for the party. At the end of the Red Revolution, over 70 million Chinese had been killed. Apart from the personal sacrifice, the Chinese revolutionaries crucially had help from the old Soviet Union and it is arguable if they would have succeeded without such. There is no chance of Nigerians getting such external support and internally the politicians all have the high ranking military / security personnel in their pockets. The hope of any revolution in Nigeria today lies in the hands of middle level officers like yourself.

My dear Patriot you will agree with me that the world today will not allow a revolution along such lines, internally Nigerians will not support any that will wipe out such a significant number. What is needed at the initial stage is one modelled on the Rawlings principle. This would target the people who have left this country in its present quagmire.  Do not let arguments against the appropriateness of military rule in this era dissuade you from this noble cause.  Before now we have had military interventions that were self serving and often times sponsored by the very ruling class and treasury looters who got us in the mess in the first place. Your coup will be the very first Peoples Coup in Nigeria. Dear Patriot you must strike now before another elitist or treasury looters sponsored coup is foisted on us.

This contraption called “Western Democracy” is not just working; there are 17,500 individuals in the Senate, House of Representatives, Governors, State House of Assemblies and Local Government Chairmen / Councillors in Nigeria. Note that these are mostly crooks, election riggers and men of great dishonour. These grave robbers are united in their quest to loot Nigeria and apart from the undeclared sums which these rascals steal; they cost our dear country N 1.3 trillion. That is 26.3 percent of the entire 2010 budget of our fatherland. My dear Patriot, this is open robbery, how can 17,500 people out of 150 million appropriate 26.3 percent for themselves? Open robbery I call it. How can we stand by idly and let these grave robbers steal us back into the Stone Age? What we practise is a very flawed and expensive system and we must rid ourselves of it

There is no way we can progress under the conditions we are. Dear Patriot, every nation must practise that which is best suited to her needs. China did not become a super power practising an expensive and ill suited Western style government, it produced a system that enabled it grow and become one of the leading lights today. And nobody can argue with a system that favours the majority over a thieving few. My dear Patriot I am not advocating for the wholesome adaption of the Chinese model, but there are aspects of its political structure that we can copy. One of these is its zero tolerance for corruption.

Corruption has been the greatest enemy of our country, unless you are able to defeat it; you will fail. The citizens will line up behind you if they see you are genuinely fighting corruption. You must adapt the China model where corruption is a capital offence. Where is the deterrence in making somebody like Lucky Igbinedion pay a mere N3 million fine? In China his sentence would have been a noose or a bullet in the back of the head and that is what real deterrence is. Punishment for all acts of corruption must be severe and very public. The perpetuators must be humiliated and paraded through streets as was done in China, this way their spirits would be thoroughly broken and will send a very strong message to the rest of the populace.

Your intervention must be to clean the Aegean stable. You must be fair to the generality of the oppressed Nigerians and be a firm rod that will smash the thieving elites. Nigerians are baying for blood. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that the tree of liberty needs to be watered by the blood of patriots and tyrants. Those who have looted our coffers must pay the ultimate price. Your justice must be swift and non discriminatory, you will need to set up Special Tribunals that will try all those accused of corruption. Corruption must be made a capital offence and all those who have been robbing us and rubbing our faces in it must be put on trial and be made to face their date with the hangman.

Are you likely to face any opposition when you embark on this patriotic journey? Yes. First you will face a storm of criticism from the usual suspects; United States, Canada, Britain and the rest of the EU. They will threaten sanctions and may cut off diplomatic ties but they can do no more. America does not have the stomach for another military confrontation. Britain cannot also afford one just like the rest of the Western world who are in the grip of a recession. In any case their influence has been on the wane and it is very unlikely that China, the new super power, will oppose a military intervention that is aimed at liberating the people. Dear Patriot you must uphold the social contract that the present leaders have defecated upon and as long as you do that, the West will not have a leg to stand on.

Internally you will be faced by various so called Human rights groups, expect these groups to multiply as the collaborators of those who have been looting us will use some of these organisations to attack you. Most of the media organisations who are also part of the problem we are facing today will oppose you. Your response should be good governance and unrelenting fight against corruption. You must not make the mistake of General Buhari who waged an unnecessary war against the media, you must encourage them to publicise all acts of corruption in the public sector. You should aim to run a lean government and do away with the bloated system we have currently. We certainly do not need 17,500 elected officials  just like we don’t want a situation where Special Advisers have their own special Advisers.

You will also face opposition from within your own constituency; there are those who will view the intervention as an opportunity to steal. It is for this reason that you must be circumspect in your choice of people to work with. Integrity must be your watchword; you must seek out the brightest minds in our country and harness their talents, with all these people you should then develop a political system that will best suit us. Multi party Western Democracy as I have mentioned before is not what we need. My dear Patriot, it will be a long and difficult journey but you must not waver. Nigeria cannot afford to have these rascals parading the corridors of power, you must act with great haste and push them out before it is too late. Our nation is crying out for you, I wish you God speed and I look forward to hearing your voice on the radio.
