The Oyo state police command today in Ibadan charged Senator Teslim Folarin   with the murder of Lateef Salako aka "Eleweomo. Senator Folarin is the majority leader in the Nigerian senate and a PDP gubernatorial aspirant in Oyo state.

Mr. Folarin was arrested and interrogated yesterday. After seeking "legal opinion" from the presidency, the police decided that the senator, who was involved in last week's party congress skirmish that led to the cold-blooded murder of Salako, should be charged.

The dramatic charges  were proffered on the strength of confessional statements made by police orderlies attached to the senator. Mr. Folarin's police detail reportedly claimed that the senator ordered them to shoot  Salako, a factional leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

After the charges were read to him in court this morning the senator pleaded  not guilty.

The court remanded him in Agodi prison in Ibadan.
