Alhaji Gubio was the  cousin of current governor, Ali Modu Sheriff.  He was also the Commissioner for Finance in the state. It is unclear if Alhaji Gubio, who was shot in front of his house, was assassinated by the Boko Haram militants in the state who have vowed to kill the governor.

The younger brother of the governor was Goni Sherrif. Sources told SaharaReporters that after the Friday Jumat service, the victims had gone to say hello to Gubio's  father when they were attacked in front of Alhaji Gubio's house and killed.

UPDATE: The number of people shot dead on the scene has risen to 8 in total, it includes two undercover police officers, a by-stander shoe maker  and two of Mr. Gubio's supporters.
