South African sources told Saharareporters that the Nigerian government requested that Okah be ex-communicated after they claimed he made several calls to journalists, Niger Delta militants and Nigerian officials to express the desire of the movement for emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to shut down oil production in the region.

Mr. Okah is being held in a "punishment cell", isolated from other prisoners.
