Contrary to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s claim that he was tricked into attending a reception organized for Bode George, to mark his release from jail, Saharareporters has confirmed that Obasanjo was part of the team that planned the celebration.

Weeks before Bode George was freed, a meeting on how to welcome the former chieftain of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) back into the PDP ‘family’ was held at Obasanjo’s residence.

Our sources said that the primary reason why Obasanjo and his PDP friends gave Bode George a robust welcome was to atone for the sin of abandoning him while he was in prison. The PDP hopes to utilize what our source called “Bode George’s vast knowledge on how to win elections” in the service of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign. President Goodluck Jonathan sent the Minister for Defense, Adetokunbo Kayode, to represent him at the ceremony.

Obasanjo told reporters at his home in Abeokuta that Bode George sent a ‘passionate message’ to him from prison urging him to attend a family church thanksgiving. He said he was surprised to find the atmosphere at the event to be more than a family affair.

“The fallout from the blown out reception,” our source said “surprised the likes of Obasanjo. In an effort to minimize the damage to his reputation, the former president had to concoct a cook-and-bull story.”

Obasanjo, who will be celebrating his 74th birthday on Saturday, hoped that by calling his attendance an error, he would placate the Nigerian public who were dismayed at PDP’s celebration of criminality.

In 2009, a Lagos High Court sentenced Bode George to two-year in prison for contract splitting, abuse of office and award of about N100 billion contracts without due process while service as the Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority.
