PDP Rally Blast In Niger State : Death Toll Rises To 10

The Death toll from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  rally in Niger State  yesterday, has risen to 10 while scores of  victims of massive bomb blast  remain on the danger list at various hospitals in the area.

The Police Public Relations (PPRO) Officer, Mr Richard Oguchem has confirmed  the blast  and casualty figure adding that the Police is investigating the matter.

According to him, no arrest has been made yet while investigation into the incident is underway.

Also the head of medical services at the Suleja General Hospital Okoye Chukwudi said three people were brought to the hospital dead from the scene of the blast and about 25 others were admitted “with both major and minor injuries”.
 
Some  20 of the affected people admitted to the Suleja General Hospital  are responding to treatment while four are in critical condition.
 
The state governor, Dr. Mu‘azu Babangida Aliyu and his deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Ibeto as well as others officials at the rally ground escaped unhurt.
 
Former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida, an indigene of the state, reportedly said that it was “disturbing and disheartening to note that bombings are becoming part and parcel of the democratic process.”
 
 
The venue, Government Secondary School, Suleja, was rocked by the blast towards the end of the rally when a passenger of a moving vehicle  along the Suleja-Abuja road lobbed a bomb into the large crowd.
 
The bomb exploded immediately leaving 10 people dead on the spot and several   others injured.  

Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, and his deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Ibeto, were hurriedly ferried out of the venue by security operatives other top government officials and party operatives also jumped into their vehicles and  left.
