April 3, 2011

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP, strongly condemns the kidnap of the Member representing Gokana / Khana Federal Constituency in the House of Representative, Hon. Emmanuel Deeyah, and the murder of his aide yesterday at his home town, Gwara in Khana local Government area of Rivers State, shortly after the postponement of the National Assembly Election.

MOSOP finds no justifiable reason for this callous and dastardly act especially, coming at a time everyone expects free and fair election, devoid of any acts of violence and intimidation.

We insist that politics should not be played with acts of violence or any intimidating tendencies, but must allow space for even opposing views, which to us is the hallmark of democracy. It is regrettable that today we pride ourselves as being in a democracy, but democracy is not just all about elections. It is the tolerance of opposing views without recourse to violence. That is the most important attribute of democracy.

Whilst calling on the various security agencies to urgently make concerted efforts in securing his unconditional release as well as spare no stones in unravelling those behind this dastardly act, MOSOP appeals to all Ogoni people and the general public to provide information of any kind that would help in securing his release.
