PDP Cautions Supporters Against Retaliating Against The North Over Violence

April 18, 2011

Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed has enjoined all members, loyalists and supporters of the party nationwide to exercise caution and restraint following attacks by political opponents over results of the just-concluded presidential election.

Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed has enjoined all members, loyalists and supporters of the party nationwide to exercise caution and restraint following attacks by political opponents over results of the just-concluded presidential election.

Expressing worry over the spate of what he called baseless and unprovoked attacks on his members in certain parts of the country over results of the elections which many local and international observers have adjudged the best in the nation’s electoral history, he alleged that the attacks were part of an organized plot by some anti-democratic elements in the country to truncate the collective will of the Nigerian people which they expressed at the ballot last Saturday.

“The Nigerian people have spoken with their votes. With their votes, they have expressed their collective will to live and prosper in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

“They voted for prosperity. They did not vote for violence. Anti-democratic elements and agents of destabilization masquerading as politicians are behind the violence that has been reported in certain parts of the country.

“Their mission is to cast shadow on the elections that have been adjudged as free, fair, credible and transparent by many Nigerians including local and international observers.

“They must not be allowed to lord their whims and caprices over the majority. They should not be allowed to use violence to discredit this highly – successful electoral process,” he said.

“For example, at least over 10 houses were razed in Yola, Adamawa State capital while a similar attack was recorded in Mubi, the second largest town in the state. Also, Azare in Bauchi State where the state’s PDP chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Yaro-Yaro as well as the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Dr. Musa Babayo hail from was not spared.

The campaign office of the Bauchi State Governor, Malam Isa Yuguda was completely burnt down just as several vehicles belonging to PDP agents were set ablaze by youths purportedly hired by some of the anti-democratic agents.

“It is crystal clear to us as true democrats that some anti-democratic elements are desperate to truncate the process by casting shadow on the elections which many Nigerians including local and international observers have adjudged as free, fair, credible and transparent.

“We enjoin our teeming members and supporters not to retaliate or respond to these unprovoked attacks. It is a booby-trap set by these elements. We must therefore watch it. At the same time, we call on the security agencies in the country to rise up to the occasion and nip this emerging ugly development in the bud. They should increase their vigilance now,” he said.
