The trouble in the township is related to the announcement of elections results which proclaimed President Goodluck Jonathan as the winner of the April 16 presidential election. The rival party, Congress of Progressive Change (CPC) have rejected the results claiming that the ruling party inflated final tallies in several southern states.

Already several cities in the north were engulfed in deadly riots earlier today. The police claimed the situation is under control in those cities.

SaharaReporters called a hotline provided by the office of the National Security Adviser and  a respondent told us that the commissioner of police had been contacted about the crisis in Kafachan but a man who said he is a christian in the area said that the only police station had been overrun by rampaging Muslim youths. He said the Christians were hiding out in a town nearby.
