Mr. Okafor’s resignation comes as the governor reels from a disastrous electoral showing by his party’s candidates in just concluded elections. Several sources described Mr. Obi, who personally chose most of the party’s candidates in legislative elections, as “downcast,” “withdrawn” and “in a vengeful mood” following his party’s failure to win a single senatorial seat in the elections.

The departure of his commissioner for Commerce comes as an added political blow for Governor Obi whose popularity rating is at an all-time low in the state.

SaharaReporters could not ascertain the specific grounds for Mr. Okafor’s decision to quit the cabinet, but a source close to the commissioner said the governor’s habit of not listening to advice as well as not caring for the well being of others.

The source disclosed that Mr. Okafor had contacted Governor Obi recently about threats to his life, adding, “The governor was just nonchalant.”

“One of the serious assignments of a governor is to see that the lives and property of all residents are safe,” said the source, adding, “it is a matter of grave insensitivity when a governor does not respond at all to reports that the life of one of his commissioners is being threatened.”

SaharaReporters tried to reach the ex-commissioner, but he was not answering his phone. A source close to him told our correspondent that Mr. Okafor, who hails from Ufuma town, might have traveled out of Awka.
