Federal authorities have brought forgery charges against Anambra Senator, Alphonsus Igbeke.

In a suit, "the Federal Republic of Nigeria Vs.Senator Alphonsus Igbeke," which was filed today, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice filed a two-count charge of criminal forgery and perjury against the controversial senator before the Federal High Court  in Abuja.

Mr. Igbeke, who was ran for the Senate in the Anambra North Senatorial District has gone into hiding and was charged in absentia. The Office of the AGF said it is now incumbent on the court to issue a bench warrant for Igbeke's arrest.

On May 11, the Senator Elect of the Anambra North Senatorial District, Prince John Okechukwu Emeka, filed a petition asking the National Judicial Council to sanction Justice Abdu-Kafarati, alleging that although he won the senatorial election in the distriction, Justice Abdu-Kafarati had   caused the certificate of return to be handed over to Igbeke who never contested the election.

Prince Emeka also alleged that Justice Abdu-Kafarati had conferred immunity on Igbeke by issuing an order restraining the Police from investigating the allegation of forgery leveled against Igbeke.

In a press statement on May 13, Igbeke's lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, alleged that the Police had mounted a discreet surveillance aimed at facilitating Igbeke's arrest.  He warned that the actions of the police were “in complete violation of the Rule of Law, an existing court order and the fundamental rights of Senator Alphonsus Igbeke.”
