As of the time of writing this report, Mr. Jonathan was still in Abuja attending a public lecture as part of the weeklong "presidential inauguration ceremony." The minister of foreign affairs was also sighted in Abuja, meaning that Nigeria will have no formal representation at the event even as Nigeria jostles for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council.

The Paris source said Mr. Jonathan feared that he might get stuck in France due to the recent Icelandic volcanic eruption that is disrupting flights around Europe.

About 1,000 flights were cancelled last night as dense clouds emerged from the Icelandic volcanoes, but flying resumed today in most parts Europe.
