Letter to Uncle 'Abeena'

June 20, 2011

Dear Uncle: I did not know you won your seat back to Abuja, until last night while I had the misfortune of following a link to the Inec website.

Dear Uncle: I did not know you won your seat back to Abuja, until last night while I had the misfortune of following a link to the Inec website.

I see, Iroko has done his magic for you in Ondo state, after you left the
PDP.

I refuse to congratulate you.

As you aburo, I enjoy that right absolutely, but that is not even the
point. The point is I do not think you deserve a place in Abuja to
represent Akure/North South LGA, again.

You enjoyed a four year term, after your return from the United states and
I am afraid, it is hard, actually impossible to remind anything of note
that you stood for, while in Abuja.

While I was with you in Abuja, I can count few things, that you did, that
I thought were outrageously stupid. But who am I am to say my uncle is
stupid ? So I will never say you are stupid.

But because you know the kind of inspiration, competence, urge,
performance, dream, ambition and above all, leadership that an everyday
American Senator provides when he in Washington on behalf of his
constituency, I have no hesitation to say that you first four years was a
catastrophe. It was nothing to write home about.

And because you know, or should know, the kind of mess that Nigeria is,
let alone the kind of retardation that is in Akure, compared to Houston,
or Baltimore, let alone London, or Tokyo and you let the politics - eerh!
gangsterism of Abuja dictate the fate and roll of your conscience,
education, exposure and performance, I am sorry to say, I do not owe you
in any esteem politically.

As a matter of fact, I consider you a gangster. A PDP gangster. But you
are my uncle. So while I should fear the murderous capacities of all other
PDP or Labour party gangster, I owe to tell you the truth, because I know
you cannot do anything murderous to me.

You have another four years in Abuja.

Let me give you three things that you can start to invest your time in. I
would have told you these while you were a PDP gangster, but most of the
time, the presence of your gangmembers around you would not let me speak
in the plain honesty, and perhaps loud intensity of a connected
Ologunmeta. This is why I have finally decided to write this letter to you.

And as you can tell, I am not pushing any hold button. You are my uncle.
Nothin' do me, Abi ?

One, Governor Mimiko's government speak all the time of finding a
breakthrough for the Youths of Ondo state; Ask him what he has done to
make bring the pathetic ramshackle that is the Ondo state Library, to
world class standards ? You can do something about that. You know what
obtains in grade C libraries in Atlanta. It is not that hard to have the
same level of facility in Akure and in Iju, and in Okitipupa. You know too
well what the Americans like to say - Nothing is impossible.

Two, since the last few years that you have been out of Abuja, I am sure
you would have had to bribe one or two policeman, who did not know who you
are, like we did when we travelled back to base in 2003; I found it
disgraceful that day. So called Nigerian Police is probably the most
useless in t he world. If you are going to stay alive and perhaps out of
prison in Abuja, you need to start working with your colleagues on how to
put a final stop to the nonsense that we pass off, as policing in Nigeria.
You can do it. You know you can. All you need to do is start, and start
now.

Three, When was the last time you watched OSRC ? You are representing
Akure right ? OSRC was one of the most professionally run Television
outfit in SouthWest Nigeria in the 1980s. I was young, but I knew. Today,
most families, including yours, dole out all our Naira to South-Africa
operated DSTV. You can set an agenda that will ensure OSRC takes a radical
change that will return it to its old glory. This is not simple. OSRC's
main function, in the last few years - at least since the days of the
Military, is a propaganda tool in the hands of Alagbaka. You know it, but
I refuse to believe you cannot do anything about it. It may mean totally
declaring war with your governor - to give OSRC a semblance of
broadcasting independence, and professional management. You know how hard
CNN can be on Obama, or how hard the BBC try to balance their stories,
just to reflect public opinion. Again, nothing is impossible, you can
start.

Four, Ondo state has enough raw materials to be the food basket of Ondo
state, if not Nigeria. But she is not. Have you ever wondered why ? Ask
yourself. Do something about that.

Five, there are many Seun Ogunkoya's languishing around in Ondo state
right now. My junior brother don't even remember who Seun Ogunkoya is. I
am not sure you know yourself. But you represent Akure North / South. You
should commit, and do all that is necessary to have twenty Seun Ogunkoya
within the next four years.

If you want me to continue to list what you can do within the next four
years of your stay in Abuja, you know where to find me.

Have a lot of sleepless nights in Abuja, as is the norm. But make the
nights the stuff even Aba Sao would be proud of.

Only then, may I find the rationale to congratulate you. I hope you find
the will to re-discover yourself. Either way, May your road be rough.

Me. Your Aburo.
