Tenure Elongation: Why Jonathan Must Be Stopped

Dear Editor: As Nigerians try to move on with their lives in moments of deep despair inflicted by inept and corrupt leadership,it is very appalling that the people are further taken for a ride and deeper in a hole by the current gamble of the president,Dr Goodluck Jonathan to extend his tenure in office.

This is very curious when you consider that he had been in that office for the second year without any single achievement. What we have seen so far are lies, deceit, hypocrisy and gross incompetence.A case in point is the shoddy, lackluster cabinet he recently constituted where all the members are clearly appointed to serve/protect one special interest or another that has nothing to do with the welfare of the citizenry.

The reasons adduced so far for this policy or proposal  are ludicrous, mundane and outrightly preposterous. Is it not deceitful for the president to talk about cost of elections when much more money are stolen in the presidency,National Assembly,MDA's,etc under his watch?Or how can he fathom or justify an Ohakim or Akala, etc 6yr single tenure and its attendant complete destruction of social, economic, cultural, etc fabrics of their states? What is the president thinking?

It is very instructive that Mr Reuben Abati will play a significant role in propagating this fairytale, what a shameless and unrepentant apologist. This same pattern of sycophany made Obasanjo believe that since he narrowly escaped perish under late Abacha,he might as well be predestined to rule Nigeria forever. The result was the third term gambit and its accompanied political volatilty and unrivalled waste of public funds. We are yet to overcome the fallout. The president has shown once again that he is a poor student of history but how far his luck will carry him on this one remain to be seen.

Nigerians should reject, resist and continue to resist this selfish, fraudlent and insensitive agenda. This country's bane is her leadership therefore an election or referendum to weed out bad eggs should be sooner rather than later.

Sincerely,

Anaetochi Ukenna.
