Lafiaji was sentenced to 16 years in prison in June 2010 by Justice Olusola Williams of the Lagos High Court. Also, his personal assistant, Usman Amali, was sentenced to seven years in prison after prosecutors successfully argued that the former NDLEA chair and his aide engaged in fraud, conspiracy and abuse of office.

Lafiaji and Amali were accused of receiving 164,300 Euros from Ikenna Onochie, a drug suspect detained at the NDLEA to damage investigations and prosecution of the suspect.
