Jonathan’s Conduct: An Intolerable Point Of No-Return!

January 11, 2012

It is with the greatest sense of shock and disbelief that we learn about the cold-blooded murders of protesters by Jonathan’s blood-sucking Centaurs called the Nigeria Police.

It is with the greatest sense of shock and disbelief that we learn about the cold-blooded murders of protesters by Jonathan’s blood-sucking Centaurs called the Nigeria Police.

What has happened today, Monday 9 January 2012 is sure testimony and confirmation that the previous acts of homicide in Ilorin and other parts of the country were nothing near to the devilish statements credited to the Nigeria Police that the slain persons were victims of peer murder by fellow protesters or victims of  crossfire between police and…who? That goes on and on as the awful and treacherous accounts by the police to place their devilish selves in good light.

The police must have been aware and must have been sensitized as to the seriousness of any acts of murder in a situation like this. The police must have been aware that the entire nation and the world at large are watching and taking stock of the activities of the Nigerian Police. And all these notwithstanding, the Nigeria Police had gone ahead to jettison all the expected precautionary measures out the window and had continued unabated to perpetrate in the most hideous, odious and dastardly manner the cold-blooded murders of the protesters as had just happened today!

No doubt acts of this nature must have received the nod, connivance or authority from the acclaimed Chief Security Officer of the nation, the President, President Goodluck Jonathan. But as a chief security officer of the nation, has President Jonathan carried out this duty with satisfaction? I must say without hesitation that the gut answer to this question is an emphatic and an abysmal ‘NO’.  If President Jonathan and his bullying and irascible gang of security forces have this quick and easy way to checkmate a democratically-approved mass protest by the threat and actual use of cold-blooded murder on the protesters, then one wonders why such blood thirsty acts have not been extended to the rampaging, rabble-rousing and outlaws called the Boko Haram?

For the avoidance of doubt of what I said above, if Jonathan has that security force that can kill innocent Nigerians with just a snap of the fingers, why have such a force not exterminated the Boko Haram that is now threatening the very existence of Nigeria where Jonathan is the chief security officer? This question can be answered in one or two ways as follows:
The first answer is that Jonathan is only playing the game of ping-pong with Nigerians while the

Boko Haram continues to have a field day; it is a situation where the Boko Haram has constituted itself into a chief protagonist in a death-dance drama, while the federal government contents itself with being just a mere third-rate antagonist that produces little or no influence on the Boko Haram. Again, it is likened to a situation where the Boko Haram now calls the shots while the federal government trembles at the mere whizzing sound from Boko Haram’s breath. The deduction here is that Jonathan’s government has reached its wit’s end, in which case Nigerians must have to live with terrorism as Jonathan had reiterated in the past.

The second answer is that Jonathan is in secret agreement with what the Boko Haram is presently doing and cares less for the safety and welfare of the rest of Nigerians who are daily becoming victims of the Boko Haram onslaught.

In my view I would settle for the first answer in order to give the president the benefit of the doubt that he could not be that callous as to allow Nigerians to continue to die in the hands of other outlawed Nigerians. The direct deduction, however, from this statement is that Jonathan has lost the expected grip on the situation as far as his job as the chief security officer of the nation is concerned. No doubt, Jonathan has men and women in the security forces that could kill with a snap of the fingers as are presently being experienced in the ongoing mass action. However, these men and women are patently incapable of fulfilling the imperatives of a good security setup. They kill only soft targets the way bullies go for only those they could subdue and conquer. This is not the reason for setting up any national security organization. Jonathan is constitutionally the chief security officer of the nation and that is why he assumes the added title of the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.  In that position Jonathan takes the rap or basks in the glory resulting from activities of his security forces. The person in that position is equally charged with hiring and firing security personnel down the line of the security command structure.

But, as we see, Jonathan has not been able to carry his security organizations along other than instructing them to fire at soft targets (unarmed civilians in a mass protest). Jonathan is far-removed from the knowledge of knowing who would provide a useful service in any security challenge facing the nation. Therefore it can be concluded that Jonathan is patently incompetent to hold that title of the chief security officer of the nation and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. A nation with compromised security is similar to an inadequately-protected house being blown about by a gale. And the consequence could be anybody’s guess. Absence of security means absence of the provision of other services in the country. This, unfortunately, is the pitiable situation of the nation at the moment; the nation has inexorably ground to a halt. For these reasons, Jonathan has failed as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The House of Representatives has thrown its hat into the ring to tell Jonathan to rescind the fuel subsidy removal but the response Jonathan gave to the House of Reps was to order his policemen to kill in cold blood Mr Ademola Aderinto and others today, the 9th of January 2012. The picture before the murder of Mr Aderinto speaks for itself: the victim was imploring for mercy but the duo of CSP Segun Fabunmi and DPO Victor Okafor unleashed the most dastardly act of savage and despicable murder on him! If the House of Representatives do not consider this as a direct slap on their face, then I wonder what else would. President Jonathan’s cup has really filled to the brim and is now spilling over. The events of the past seven months since assuming office as the president have shown that he (President Jonathan) is incapable of handling the reins as the nation’s president. His continuation in office will surely spell doom for the nation. As of the present count, there is mass movement of Southern and Northern Nigerians across the north-south borders; this is madness of the highest order and here was Jonathan , in his usual grandstanding, saying that Nigerians were guaranteed adequate protection. Adequate protection indeed!

What is happening in Nigeria at the moment is no different from what had happened in Nigeria in 1965-1966 that led to the first military intervention in government. Nobody prays for such a repeat for the consequences would be very dire. But if the signals point to another military intervention in government in order to check this madness, so be it. After all, the military has a duty to make sure that the government is capable of maintaining the security of the nation. The Boko Haram menace that people say is something done by some invisible groups of people is just a talk embracing madness. Boko Haram could be a masquerade but masquerades are still entities controlled by human beings.  And we know that the Boko Haram is controlled by forces outside Nigeria, including the much-dreaded Al Queda.

It is on this score that I crave the indulgence of the Nigerian Legislative Arm, the National Assembly, to step in and stop this madness. Nigeria is greater than any one person, including the president. In a situation like this nobody should be looked upon with any semblance of a kid glove. The National Assembly should set the ball rolling to IMPEACH the President because he has lost all it takes to remain the president of the country; the president has lost grip of the reins and the horse is now running and gamboling wildly; and the consequence of this would be an unmitigated disaster. But if the National Assembly begins to play politics and thinks it should give the president another chance, then ALL members of the National Assembly would be held responsible for what may happen in future. And, surely, the least of these future events would continue to be the Boko Haram menace. Even if the president used draconian force to suppress the present mass protest, he should be very wise enough to know that such would not be the end of the story. The fallout would be that more guerilla forces would jump into the fray to make governance impossible. And where would this end? Nigeria cannot continue along this line; it is quite impossible.

Let the nation open a new chapter by impeaching the president now. He has failed and he even acknowledged that when he said he had Boko Haram members in his government; and yet he could not dismiss them! President Jonathan is the silliest president the nation has ever had.
