The headline and thrust of the story tend to suggest that INEC is making plans targeted at a particular candidate or party in the upcoming election. This is far from the truth. The Commission, as an unbiased and impartial umpire, is concerned to create a level playing field for all contestants in elections. This informs the deployment of key personnel usually made for the conduct of elections - not only in Anambra State, but also in some other states where elections have been held in the recent past.

Besides, the present INEC has typically adopted measures to insulate the Commission's staff, especially in contexts where the electoral contests are highly controversial. This is the case in Anambra State. The posting of key personnel on ad hoc assignment is neither peculiar nor limited to the state. It had been done in other states in the past.

Let me reassure you once more that INEC is determined to ensure equal chances and a level playing field for all contestants in the upcoming election into the Anambra South Senatorial seat. And may I use the opportunity to state that the election comes up on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, not on Saturday, March 17, 2012 as your story indicates.

Many thanks.
