In a statement signed by President of Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, the group described the late activist as an indefatigable fighter, principled activist, consummate mobilizer and one of the original thinkers for progress and development in Nigeria.

The statement says the late activist fought and died for the poor, noting however, that the poor people whom Chima spent most of his adult life fighting for yet wallow in dire poverty.

"Seven years after Chima, over 70% of our citizenry are living under the poverty margin", the statement says.

In the statement, Joe Okei-Odumakin, lamented that the demise of late Chima Ubani came at a time the people needed his like of being the most to confront the rots in Nigeria.

She also bemoaned that the crises of underdevelopment which challenged the late Comrade Ubani to take on the struggle are still confronting the nation, stressing that the situation has become even worse.

"Nigeria has witnessed attacks on the living standards of the people through retrenchment, anti-people reforms and violent suppression of the people’s response to the despoliation of their lives. Virtually every element that makes for healthy life has gone beyond their reach", Okei-Odumakin lamented.

Apart from being the founding General Secretary of the Campaign for Democracy group, late Ubani was also Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO). The late activist began his progress in human rights struggle with student unionism, and then to human rights advocacy. Through his work in tandem with other activists at the United Action for Democracy [UAD] as well as Labour and Civil Society Coalition [LASCO], Mr. Ubani contributed overwhelmingly to the overthrow  of the capitalist order in the Nigerian state.

Owing to his contributions to fight for freedom in Nigeria, Dr. Okei-Odumakin suggested in the statement that the only way to remember  Comrade Ubani was to step up the fight to free the country from the control of corrupt politicians.

"To Chima’s constituency, the suffering people of Nigeria, our admonition is that the struggle Chima died for shall continue until victory is won.", Okei-Odumakin added.
