Members of the Oyo State security outfit called “Operation Burst” today detained the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for two hours in Ibadan, the state capital. The NANS leader, Yinka Gbadebo, was leading a protest march to the premises of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Ibadan when operatives of “Operation Burst” fired teargas to disperse the protesters.

An eyewitness said Mr. Gbadebo and six other protesters were severely beaten and then detained for two hours before they were released.

The students were demonstrating over the death of their colleagues who died in an automobile accident while traveling to Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, to intervene in a crisis that rocked the state university.

The commander of “Operation Burst” claimed ignorance of today’s incident.
