July 10, 2013

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force have continued to show systemic abuse of their uniform and state authority, as seen in the conduct of officers at the River state House of Assembly on Tuesday, July 9 2013.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force have continued to show systemic abuse of their uniform and state authority, as seen in the conduct of officers at the River state House of Assembly on Tuesday, July 9 2013.

The Nigeria Police Watch is severely alarmed by this ugly show of unprofessionalism that appears endemic in the Nigeria Police Force.

It portends a clear danger for the Nigerian society, that its police officers lack self-control, anger management skills and readily disregard the law in dealing with the public.

Nigeria Police Watch condemns the action of the police officers in the River state House of Assembly fracas. We also call on the general public to condemn the action of the police officers while authorities should severely discipline erring officers as a deterrent to others. Such flagrant abuse of office by Nigeria Police officers has no place in a decent society which ours aspires to be.

The Nigeria Police Watch also calls on the Inspector General of Police to summarily and publicly dismiss the officer seen kicking and manhandling a lawmaker in one of the videos of the River State House of Assembly fracas.

Police officers are not empowered to kill innocent people who have minor disagreement with them or their bosses. Therefore, for a police officer to assume the role of both the prosecutor and the judge, convicting and then manhandling a citizen, as punishment for perceived crime is completely unjust and unacceptable.

The Nigeria Police Watch also calls on the IGP to publicly reprimand other police officers who played a role in the shameful incident.

The Nigeria Police Watch is an NGO policing the Nigeria Police Force by crowd-sourcing information on the activities of the Force.
