The Publisher of the Kaduna-based newspapers Desert Herald, Tukur Mamu today fainted in court during his arraignment over allegations that he criminally defamed the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed at an Abuja Magistrate Court. After Mr. Tukur slumped in the courtroom, the judge adjourned the case until of September 9th 2013. The magistrate judge, Chukwu Emeka Ugbani ordered that Mr. Tukur be taken to the hospital under the supervision of police and then return to detention as soon as his health improves. However, Police prosecutor, DSP Stanley Nwodo said that the accused person would remain in police custody after he has been treated in the hospital. He accused Mamu of feigning illness as a ploy to frustrate his trial. Mr. Mamu was arrested in Kaduna on Tuesday by a team of policemen purportedly on the orders of the judge; he was driven to Abuja and detained by the police over series of reports he published about the corrupt land deals by the Federal Capital Territory minister.
