Mile One Market Fire Disaster: Deputy Speaker Commiserates with Victims ... Urges for Establishment of Fire Station there

The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee has commiserated with the victims of the mile one market fire disaster.

The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee has commiserated with the victims of the mile one market fire disaster.

Addressing the victims in the company of other lawmakers today, the Deputy Speaker said that the Rivers State House of Assembly was touched by what befell them particularly at this yelutide period where they must have stocked their goods waiting for the Christmas sales.

He urged them to bear the loss as such is the vicissitude of life.

He assured that the Assembly will advise the State government to put in place a fire station for the mile one market to arrest such an occurrence in future.


He advised the public to be mindful of igniting fire anywhere during this harmattan period pointing out that such stands the risk of degenerating to fire disaster.

In his response, the executive chairman of mile one market, Kenneth Eze told the Deputy Speaker and his entourage that goods worth billions of naira were destroyed and commended the Deputy Speaker and his colleagues for their quick response to commiserate with them.

He urged the Assembly to liaise with the State government to come to their assistance.

In another development, the Deputy Speaker and his entourage inspected ongoing D-line area internal roads construction as part of their oversight function, having resumed legislative duties arising from the Federal High Court order.


Speaking to the Commissioner for Works, Chief Victor Giadom, Hon. Kwanee said that the  Assembly was committed to seeing all projects embarked by the government were completed within the lifespan of the present administration.


He commended the contractor on the quality of work being done and urged the contractor to complete the work as scheduled and according to specification.


Responding, the Commissioner for Works, Chief Victor Giadom assured the Assemblymen that the construction is on course and on completion will make the D-line area one of the best  residential neighborhoods in the country.


In an earlier development, the Rivers State House of Assembly had obtained an interim injunction restraining Hon. Evans Bapakaye Bipi from parading himself as the Speaker or performing the function of the office pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The order was given by Justice C.N. Wali of the Ahoada Judicial division holden at Ahoada.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has invited members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID),to sign an undertaken to conduct themselves in an orderly manner when they resume sitting.

On this development, the Deputy Speaker told newsmen that the letter from the police had been handed over to the Assembly legal advisers and that the outcome of the advice will determine the next line of action.


Hon. Kwanee assured that as soon as police conclude security inspection and sweeping of the entire premises of the Assembly, an inventory will be done to accertain the extent of destruction and damage to the property of the Assembly during the fracas.
