While students slept burglars broke in to ATMs of several banks early Thursday at the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungbo-Akoko (AAUA)campus in Ondo state.

According to sources, five armed burglars gained entrance to the University through the southern gate. They captured four University's Sheriff Deputies, tied them up with ropes and covered their faces. Using an electrical iron-rod cutter they broke into the Automated Teller Machines of Access Bank and Enterprise Bank, located near the Olusegun Obasanjo Hall. The ATMs stand in a common pedestrian passage students use to walk to lectures. The burglars destroyed security cameras. An attempt on Skype Bank failed.  How much money was stolen remains unknown. Sources told us the University's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Femi Mimiko and top bank officials for Ikare and Akure headquarters visited the crime scene. The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) spokesman in the state, ASP Wole Ogbodo, said the robbery incident was reported at the Ikare divisional quarters. Ogbodo said the robbery was a surprise because it was the first time such an incident has happened on the University campus.   He blamed the escape of the robbers on University management because there was no burglary alarm, and was critical the banks lacked strong security doors. He said nobody had been arrested yet. One of the students said, "We were shocked this morning on our way to class when we got to the school and see everywhere scattered with broken glasses and pieces from the ATM machines". Another source told Saharareporters they think the burglars are graduates of the University.
