Team Nigeria Departs For African Athletics Championship Tomorrow

As expected, newly-crowned Commonwealth Games sprint double champion, Blessing Okagbare, will lead the Nigerian team comprising 30 athletes (16 women and 14 men).

Nigeria’s contingent for the Africa Athletics Championships holding in Marrakesh, Morocco are set to depart for the North African country tomorrow with the championship set to commence on Saturday.

The track and field team that took part in the just-concluded Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will leave from the Scottish city this morning, while those who did not make the Commonwealth team but are part of the African championships team are expected to leave from Lagos.

As expected, newly-crowned Commonwealth Games sprint double champion, Blessing Okagbare, will lead the Nigerian team comprising 30 athletes (16 women and 14 men).

Okagbare, who set a new Commonwealth Games women’s 100m record of 10.85 secs in Glasgow, will compete in the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m.

Also listed for the women’s 100m, 200, and the 4x100m in Marrakesh are: Gloria Asumnu, Lawretta Ozoh, Dominique Duncan, Deborah Odeyemi, Justina Sule, and Weyinmi Lindsay

Meanwhile, athletes that took part in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games were asked to return to the track on Monday and Tuesday for training as part of preparations for the Morocco event.

The showpiece, to be staged in Marrakech, Morocco will be between 10 to 14th August 2014.
