Germany Defeat Falconets To Break Hearts

August 25, 2014

For Germany, it’s a record third title after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Nigeria at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, in a match that bore resemblance to the 2010 meeting between the two sides.

For a match that started around 12.00am, many Nigerians had to force themselves to stay awake in order to watch the final of the Women U20 World Cup final.

The only goal of the game was scored by Lena Petermann, eight minutes into extra time after a goalless 90 minutes of action; the Nigeria team would rue their inability to convert one of the numerous chances created before the end of normal time.

The clash of styles was always expected to produce an open, engaging final, and so it proved. Nigeria quickly gained a foothold and went on to dominate the first half, creating a better and more numerous chances. An inability to convert those chances was their only failing and with the most guilty party being Nigeria’s talisman and tournament top scorer Asisat Oshoala.

This defeat means Germany have now won two of their three world U20 women titles at the expense of Nigeria.
