Nigeria: How fast we forget as a nation...

November 13, 2014

An irony - Nigeria, a young woman with the attributes of a very old lady. Spends her time lamenting over her failure of the past leaving herself very little time and energy to plan for her future which removes every possibility of her living in the moment. Possibly because she believes that she has lived and seen enough of this world and just doesn't care anymore.

Nigeria: How fast we forget as a nation…

An irony - Nigeria, a young woman with the attributes of a very old lady. Spends her time lamenting over her failure of the past leaving herself very little time and energy to plan for her future which removes every possibility of her living in the moment. Possibly because she believes that she has lived and seen enough of this world and just doesn’t care anymore.

But then again, she is only delusional.

Have you ever stood out to observe from outside the box and wondered what really happened to us as Africans? How we came to this condition we are as Nigerians? How we treat each other with so much hatred and almost never see the similarities among ourselves because the Mosques, the Churches and the social gatherings we frequent are obsessed with singling out and stressing the differences among us.

We blindly support a political aspirant simply because he is of the same ethnicity or religion as us. We pounce with dangerous claws on anybody from the other side who dares criticise him or her. While it is the same political aspirant that has been fucking us over and over again. Someone who has joined the politics not to serve his people but to steal from them.

The Southerners call the Northerners parasites who do not bring anything to the table but always take. The Northerners call the Southerners products of baby factories. We divide ourselves along religious lines sometimes to the point of forgetfulness of our African identity. I mean come to think of it, When you go to Saudi Arabia, they will not see you first as a muslim. No. They see the Black, African identity of yours first. When you go to Jerusalem, they don’t see you as a christian first. They see the African in you first. Wherever you go on this planet, they don’t see the Yoruba in you or the Hausa or the Igbo in you, they see the African in you. And back home, it is the African identity that we put aside and focus on the ones that separate us.

After all we have been Africans long before Islam or Christianity came to us.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you should stop practicing your religion or forget your cultural heritage. No. Thats not what I’m saying. My point is, we as a people, should always be looking for grounds that unite us, instead of ones that divide us. We should understand that we are not enemies of each other. The enemies are outside the box watching us while we hit and kick each other, sipping their favourite drink while they enjoy the show. The enemies are the ones that have stolen our money that is meant for improving  public education, health care system and security. The enemies are the obstacles that exist between us and progress, and trust me, they don’t mingle with us. They rule over us like queens and kings. They make sure they keep us busy pointing fingers at each other so very few of us will notice what is really happening behind the curtain.

Have you ever wondered why when it comes to individual assessment of who our 2015 presidential candidate should be, we never put real factors into consideration. Factors like who will solve the issue of youth unemployment, who will solve the issue of power outage, who will solve the problems of our failing educational system, health care system or even the present security problem engulfing the nation. No, we don’t consider factors like that. we’d rather talk about how since a southerner has ruled for 6 years, it should be a northerner this time.

Its selfish for us to consider dividing the nation because Africa needs Nigeria. And please don’t give me that crap that we can not exist together as a nation. I mean what
is that suppose to even mean. We are not animals. Even animals sometimes find common grounds.

So please my brothers and sisters, i call on you this moment, right here, right now, as you are reading this, to make up your mind. That there is not the northern or the southern Nigeria, but the Federal Republic Of Nigeria. That there is not the Muslim or the Christian Nigeria, but the Federal Republic Of Nigeria. That there is not the Hausa, the Yoruba, or the Igbo Nigeria, but the Federal Republic Of Nigeria.

The change starts with You and I. It is by fate that we find ourselves in this condition, but we can make a choice of changing course for a better future.
