The mayor of Mali’s northern town of Anderaboucane has died as a result of gunshot wounds he suffered when gunmen attacked his vehicle on Thursday.

Mali’s government released a statement soon after Mayor Hamatou’s death condemning the attack.

"The government reiterates its pledge to punish those responsible for these crimes and fight against all forms of terrorism to restore peace and security to the whole of Mali," the statement said.

Mali has been experiencing increased violence that threatens an already-shaky ceasefire between rebels and security forces loyal to the Malian government.

Meanwhile, six UN peacekeepers were injured on Sunday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb. Militant groups have increasingly launched attacks on the sometimes under-equipped UN forces as negotiations have failed to yield a lasting agreement between the Malian government and rebels.

The head of the UN Mission in Mali recently issued statements asking the warring factions to put their efforts into peace and cease acts of hostility.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms these acts of violence and provocation, especially the hostage-taking and pillaging," U.N. mission chief David Gressly said in a statement.
