A 40-year-old man attempted suicide on Friday after stabbing his girlfriend to death over a domestic quarrel. The incident Agudama suburb of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The boyfriend, identified to reporters as James, stabbed his girlfriend identified as Rita Abalorun, aged 35, over alleged argument that was provoked by the allegation that he was having a sexual affair with the deceased’s sister.
SaharaReporters contacted the State Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat who confirmed the incident. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa while the suspect is receiving treatment at the hospital under police watch.
The tragic incident, which occurred at about 11:20am at the lovers' residence in the Agudama settlement in the outskirts of Yenagoa, caused pandemonium among residents of the area.
Eyewitnesses said that the killer boyfriend, after stabbing the deceased, attempted to salvage the situation by rushing the dying lover to the hospital but she died before receiving medical attention.
According to the eyewitness, identified as Joshua, "On realizing the enormity of his action, the man hurriedly arranged a tricycle operator popularly known as Keke NAPEP to convey the deceased to the hospital. Instead of the Keke operator to rush the victim to the hospital as instructed, he diverted to the Akenfa Police Station and reported the case. It was at the Station they confirmed her dead."
Amidst the confusion, it was gathered that the suspected killer boyfriend escaped but was apprehended meters away while hiding in a bush.
On close check, security operatives and angry civilians discovered that the killer boyfriend had attempted to commit suicide by swallowing a dangerous insecticide known as Sniper.
