Mr. Kasahmu had earlier approached a Lagos Federal High Court, challenging the attorney general of the federation over moves to extradite him to the United State to stand trial for drug trafficking.
Civil Society Network Against Corruption, CSNAC, has dragged Justice Okon Abang of the Lagos Judicial Division of the Federal High Court before the National Judicial Council for hearing a fresh suit filed by a U.S.- wanted Nigerian senator elect, Buruji Kashamu, in connection with importation of prohibited narcotics from 1993 to 1995.
Mr. Kasahmu had earlier approached a Lagos Federal High Court, challenging the attorney general of the federation over moves to extradite him to the United State to stand trial for drug trafficking.
Justice Okechukwu Okeke, the trial judge, ruled that he should not be extradited.
However, the ruling by the Federal High Court was challenged by the Attorney General of the Federation at the Court of Appeal which set aside the decision of Justice Okeke, saying the allegation of a plan to extradite Mr. Kashamu was speculative and mere hearsay.
Mr. Kashamu subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court, praying the apex court to set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal and restore the judgment of the FHC.
With the matter still pending at the Supreme Court, Mr. Kashamu filed a fresh suit before Justice Okon Abang of Federal High Court, Lagos.
According to the group, Mr. Kashamu is bent on tarnishing the image of the judiciary and has no right to file a fresh suit before a Federal High Court in Lagos over the same matter already ruled upon by the Court of Appeal.
CSNAC also accused Justice Abang of exposing the judiciary to ridicule by encouraging the lawyers and listening to the fresh suit. The group called for the judge’s investigation and sanction by the NJC.
“Please, treat this petition with utmost urgency to save the image of the judiciary in particular and the Nigerian legal profession in general” CSNAC said in the petition signed by Olanrewaju Suraju, its chairman.
