A suicide bomb in the capital of Chad, N’djamena, killed 14 people and wounded 74 others on Saturday morning, according to police reports. The attack happened at about 8:30 am in a popular market area.

According to witnesses, the attacker was a man dressed in a woman’s burqa. Chad made headlines for banning the head-to-toe garment in June, amid fears terrorists could disguise weapons or explosives with it.

Chadian officials blame the terrorist group Boko Haram for the attacks. Chad has experienced an intensification of terrorist attacks since it started supporting Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram.

“The suicide bomber was a man disguised as a woman [in a burqa]. He tried to enter the market when he was intercepted by police,” police spokesperson Paul Manga said.

“That is when he detonated the bomb,” he added.

In June, two suicide attacks on police locations in N’Djamena killed at least 34 people.
