Retired civil servants in Ondo State say the nonpayment of their gratuities, which has accumulated into N13 billion under the administration of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is making life unbearable, and mentioned that it has also sent several of their colleagues to early graves.
Retired civil servants in Ondo State say the nonpayment of their gratuities, which has accumulated into N13 billion under the administration of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is making life unbearable, and mentioned that it has also sent several of their colleagues to early graves.
The retirees, under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), issued their plea in a statement exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Jointly signed by the NUP’s State Chairman, Rapheal Adetuwo, and the group’s Secretary, Adejare Adesida, the statement said the Mimiko-led government has made an illegal deduction from pensioners’ monthly allowances since December 2013.
The pensioners noted that paying and settling their outstanding benefits immediately would give them the opportunity to live with decency in their old age.
“The entire pensioners in Ondo State appeal to Mr. Governor to look at our cases as a matter of urgency and settle all pensioners’ outstanding benefits in order to give us the opportunity to live decent lives in our old age.”
The union also pressed Governor Mimiko to urgently address pension increases and arrears dating as far back as December 2012.
