The announcement was made on State radio and television stations late Wednesday. In a speech announcing the move, President Vaz said a “government reshuffle” was not enough to solve the problem.

President Vaz and and Prime Minister Pereira have had a tense relationship since last June, when civilian rule was restored to the West African nation after the 2012 coup d'etat.

During his Wednesday address the President officially dismissed Pereira and his cabinet with immediate effect. President Vaz said that there called "a breach of trust" between the two men.

Tensions, motivated by overlapping duties in Guinea Bissau's semi-presidential system, have grown between the President and Pereira since elections restored civilian rule last year following a 2012 coup.

Pereira had previously said the PAIGC, the ruling party to which both Vaz and Pereira belong, was planning a convention this year to address the tensions.

The country has undergone nine coups or attempted coups since 1980.
