N25 Million Fraud Rocks Delta Journalists’ Association

September 10, 2015

The Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) is currently caught in a financial mess, with the union’s vice chairman, Felix Igbekoyi, demanding that the state chairman, Norbert Chiazor, account for N25 million spent on the NUJ building in Asaba, the state capital.

In a letter dated August 5, 2015, and addressed to the chairman and the group’s secretary, Mr. Igbekoyi urged the chairman and his cohorts to give a thorough explanation to the executive about the spending of the union’s funds.

Mr. Igbekoyi accused the NUJ chairman of intentionally sidelining him in the management of the union, adding, “I have pleaded for explanations on these issues but you have always ignored and harassed me with [the] response that ‘the Vice Chairman has no role in the NUJ Constitution’ which l have found out to be untrue.”

The aggrieved vice chairman also asked for an explanation on how N700, 000 was spent on the 2015 Abuja Delegates Conference. “Over N700, 000 was realized for the Abuja 2015 Delegates Conference trip and no explanation has been given on how this fund was spent,” he wrote.

The letter stated, “As vice chairman of the Council, it is strange that l do not know how N25 million was spent on the NUJ land at Mariam Babangida Road, Asaba.”

A correspondent of SaharaReporters sent text messages to the NUJ chairman, but received no response. Phone calls made to the chairman’s mobile number were also ignored.
