The source disclosed that government was very “frank” in its decision to ensure all the commercial motorcyclists comply with directive and laws despite lifting the ban.
The Ondo State government has lifted its ban placed on the operation of commercial motorcyclists otherwise known as "Okada riders" in the State.
A source on told SaharaReporters that the embattled Governor of the State, Olusegun Mimiko, ordered the immediate announcement lifting the ban on the activities of the cyclists.
The sources said the Governor met with some stakeholders in the transport sector and the leadership of the Amalgamated Commercial Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The source disclosed that government was very “frank” in its decision to ensure all the commercial motorcyclists comply with directive and laws despite lifting the ban.
"The government was though in its decision making. In fact, the meeting didn't go down well with some of our members but we just have to comply because many of us were tired and can't wait to be on the streets to start our day-to-day work in feeding our family.”
He added that the leadership of the ACOMORAN promised at the meeting to be taxed and ensure their members pay for damages done during the protest carried out in the State which led to their activities been suspended.
"I can confirmed to you that the State government has said no going back on the registration of all motorcycles in the State.
"The Mimiko government has penned down October 1st, 2015 as the deadline for the enforcement of full implementation and collection jackets for our members,” the source said.
He further disclosed that Mimiko had already set up a monitoring team to watch over the activities of commercial motorcyclists to avoid using them to perpetrate crimes in the night.
The State government had on Friday, July 24, 2015 outlawed the operations of commercial motorcyclists in the State after a heavy protest by the cyclists over unfair restrictions.
The cyclists had protested against Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s draconian policy of mandating the State owned plates number and residency card on the okada riders.
