NCP Legal Victory Forces Lagos Government To Hold LGA Elections In 30 Days

October 25, 2015

The National Conscience Party (NCP) won their case this past Friday, October 23 2015 demanding elections take place in all Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Lagos State. The NCP demanded that the Lagos State government represented by the Attorney General, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) eliminate the so-called “Caretaker Committees” which are operating in place of duly elected LGA officers.

Justice A.M Lawal, who presided over the case, declared all caretakers in the local government as illegal according to section 7 of the 1999 Constitution which states that no Governor has the authority to take over administration of local government.

SaharaReporters reported on Friday that Justice Lawal ruled that LASIEC will conduct elections within 30 days of his decision.

Adegoruwa Ebunolu, the lawyer representing the NCP, called upon Governor Ambode and President Buhari to enforce the court’s judgment and that the All Progressives Congress (APC) follow through on their rhetoric of anti-corruption and dismantle the caretaker committees.

The National General Secretary of the NCP, Ayodele Akele, spoke to the press and stated that he felt local government has been abandoned because of the dilapidated infrastructure, especially the roadways and gutters.
