Bombings In Maiduguri Leave At Least 34 Dead, Scores Wounded

At least 34 people were killed and more than 90 were injured in multiple explosions that hit Maiduguri, capital of Borno State in the last 24 hours, according to officials.

In a briefing provided to Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima by the Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital it was noted that the hospital received 34 bodies and was treating 86 injured victims of the attacks.

Another hospital, the Umoru Specialist Hospital, is treating 21 people injured by the bomb blasts including 4 pregnant women.

Speaking shortly after visiting the victims, Governor Shettima stated that the attack would not deter government from preaching for peace, tolerance, and understanding amongst the citizenry.

The governor also visited some of the scenes of the attack at Bakassi where he consoled the village head and the relatives of victims, he also prayed for the deceased.

On Monday three female suicide bombers are believed to have detonated their explosives at various locales, killing scores of civilians in Husari Bulaburin an area on the outskirts of Maiduguri as well as the Polo area of Maiduguri.

Members of civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) said at least 10 suicide bombers detonated IEDs in the last 24 hours and that they cordoned off the Polo area for the safety of civilians.

''I can't get accurate figures but in all the attacks at least 40 people were killed and 90 others are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals in Maiduguri, ''  A source said.

Meanwhile speaking at the headquarters for Operation Lafia Dole, the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army informed members of the press that 26 people were killed and 85 were injured, and that two suspected suicide bombers were captured by the military.
