The African Union (AU) has scrapped its plan to send 5,000 peacekeepers to Burundi, according to media sources.

The central African country has been wracked by political violence since April when PResident Pierre Nkurunziza decided to seek a controversial third term.

Thus far, the violence has left 439 people dead and 240,000 have fled the country.
