According to a statement signed by Mohammed Isa, Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Mr. Saraki made the announcement while speaking with editors from London’s The Economist.

He also said that the Senate budget, which has never been made public, will be released to the public.

“For the first time we promised Nigerians that the Senate will disclose its budget breakdown. The committee will make its report available by next week,” Mr. Saraki said.

Mr. Saraki stated that the decision to publish the budget reiterates the Senate and National Assembly’s commitment to fight corruption alongside President Muhammadu Buhari. It will be recalled that Mr. Saraki is facing charges of corruption before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The trial has been adjourned to March 18, 2016.

He emphasized that the Senate has already exhibited its dedication to fighting corruption, pointing to its investigation into transaction fraud committed the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which saved Nigeria N7bn. In addition to saving the country money, this investigation also highlighted inconsistencies in the budget, according to Mr. Saraki.
