BUHARI'S APOLOGY: THE SWEET FRUIT OF CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISMS

March 25, 2016

"We had to go back and lick our vomit in terms of university boards because we found out that according to their laws, they cannot choose Vice Chancellors unless the Boards sit down, interview prospective candidates who wants to be VCs.

So, there is nothing wrong in saying sorry and going back on your decision. So, we said sorry and allow all the universities to continue with their boards. But for the rest, eventually, we will make it. So, please, try to bear with us as we reflect on where we found ourselves." President Buhari 24/03/2016

This is the true essence of opposition, to keep the ruling constantly on their feet all for the good of the masses. The essence of criticisms is not necessarily to demean the persona of an individual, but to such attain betterment and good standards. I am not a sadist, nor am i blind too to the imperfect nature of all human. So when a man gets it right i give it to him! A good critic is not the man that sees nothing right with humanity. At best that is the definition of sadism. So beyond ethno-political sentiments, I give it to President Buhari, He passed a basic leadership test yesterday.

By apologizing to the Board of the Universities whom he arm-twisted on February 12; booting out Vice Chancellors of 12 Federal Universities and the National Open University the President showed that he is willing to learn. The admission comes as a shock to keen observers who knew the retired soldier as one not often given to remorse. The President admitted first that he erred, and then that he acted in ignorance- a serious indictment to either him or his handlers. If the President's aide especially the Minister of Education didn't warn him ahead of the implication of his decision then Minister Adamu clearly does not know his work. If he did and the President did not welcome it, then Baba is guilty. Still whatever happens the buck stops at the President's table, which is why i respect him for the public apology.

Having appropriated accolade to whom it is due, let me quickly point out that President Buhari really need to calm down and rule the country with reason rather emotions. The job of a President in a democratic dispensation is clearly harder than that of a head of state. Thankfully, we have grown way past that. If the President really want to make sincere progress in his government, then he must listen and pay very good attention. No matter how sure one is about a murderer, one is not permitted to take laws into their hands!

I find it quite disturbing that the President publicly declared to the world that he was ignorant of University Council laws! What are the Ministers and special advisers there for? Whatever happens, human that we are, there are certain kind of mistakes that the country's numero uno cannot afford to make. The President must not be in a hurry! Nay he must act exact and accurate after due consultations are made. Those handling the man should help him make right choices and achieve the feat he swore to achieve.

Once again permit me to call this a victory for the people and for the constructive talkertives who would not rest until good sees the light of the day. Those who blindly support or criticize have lost it in all frontiers. Thanks to our sweet criticisms we now have a refurbished President, remorseful and contrite.
