NOPRIN Petitions IGP Over Mysterious Death Of Police Inspector In Ebonyi

The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN) on Monday called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to order an urgent investigation into the death of Police Inspector Michael Udoh of the Ebonyi State Command, who died in mysterious circumstances on February 28, following an accident he reportedly suffered on duty nine days earlier.

A petition to the IGP by National Coordinator Okechukwu Nwanguma exhaustively detailed the report NOPRIN received from Raymond Michael, a son of the deceased, and his request for a prompt, impartial and exhaustive investigation to unravel the mystery surrounding the tragic and unnatural death of his father.

The deceased, who served at the Ishielu Police Station in Ebonyi State, was said to have been in an accident involving a 911 lorry, according to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Amah Bethel.    The DPO gave no details.

In addition to the inconsistencies in that story, the family told NOPRIN that the police refused to carry out an autopsy on the body of Mr. Udoh, who served the Police Force for 33 years.

On the other hand, they noted that Mr. Bethel showed far more interest in the burial of Mr. Udoh, leaving the family to wonder why he was interested in having the deceased Inspector buried but not in an autopsy to establish the actual cause of his injuries and death.
