UNIPORT Closes Down In Midst Of Violent Student Protests

Senior student Peter Ofurum was shot and killed during the protests, according to recent reports.

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Senate announced on Monday evening the closure of the institution in the wake of violent students’ protests over fee hikes.

The Spokesman and Deputy Registrar of UNIPORT, Williams Wodi, made the announcement on Monday evening, directing students to leave their accommodations before 6:00 pm. The closure will last one month.

According to Dr. Wodi, three persons have been killed outside of the UNIPORT campus, but the university has not yet confirmed if one of the victims was a student.

“Yesterday, a mobile policeman was shot outside the campus. Also yesterday, a person suspected to be a trader was shot at the same spot. Today, we heard that another person was shot at the same area. We do not know yet if the person is a student.”

The protest against the fee rise began on Monday morning and resulted in the destruction of buildings along the East-West Road.
