NLC, Kano State Divided Over Workers’ Verification Exercise

The Head of Service, Muhammad Auwal Na'Iya, reportedly said that the committee handling the workers’ verification exercise was able to identify 7,629 workers that could not be verified by the exercise.

Sharp disagreement has emerged between the Kano State branch of the National Labour Congress (NLC) and the Kano State government after the latter released a list of workers not verified in its biometric exercise used to detect “ghost workers.”

The Head of Service, Muhammad Auwal Na'Iya, reportedly said that the committee handling the workers’ verification exercise was able to identify 7,629 workers that could not be verified by the exercise. This allowed the State government to save N283,580,848 in the month of April.

In response to this development, the chairman of the Kano State NLC, Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir, cautioned, "...we want to remind the government to be cognizant of some workers undergoing training outside the country after securing release from it.”

The chairman added, "We also identified some mix-ups in the data provided by some State organs. My humble self, the number one labor leader in the State, after duly being captured in my area of assignment, was among the list submitted from my former station as part of those who have not appeared for the exercise.”

According to Mr. Minjibir, directors and assistant directors from local governments in addition to executive members of the state NLC were also among the list.

"We therefore call on the government to fully scrutinize the established figure from the interim report and ensure accurate data. As from our own side, labor will not take it lightly if any of our genuine workers or pensioners who underwent all verification processes were deleted from the payroll,” the chairman said.
