ICPC NABS LOOTING ADSU BURSAR

The Bursar that looted and impoverished Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, Mr. Kumthy Ezra Anjili, has been nabbed by crack detectives from the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC). He was arrested on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, in Yola.

Mr. Kunthy Ezra Anjili was on the watch list of the ICPC for quite some time and landed in custody when his luck ran out and the anti-graft agency arrested him at long last. His travails began when his criminal activities were exposed and brought to the public domain by the media, particularly the print and electronic media. The first expose came last year under a screaming headline: ”Massive Fraud Exposed at ADSU.” It was followed by a more revealing and indicting report: “Anti-Corruption War Drives ADSU Bursar Underground.” The trilogy ended with a damning report: “ADSU’s Massive Fraud: Is Zenith Bank an Accomplice?”

These reports were given prime time and significance by renowned online newspapers including the New York-based Sahara Reporters, Ghana-based Native Reporters and Nigeria-based News24 and Naij.Com.

The budding but cash-strapped Adamawa State University lost N366 million alone through forgery of three Vice Chancellors’ signatures and criminal withdrawals of funds in banks with counter cheques. The University was also swindled when its contributory staff pension fund was misappropriated, University Cooperative funds and revenues from the University Guest House in Abuja were coveted, and, lastly, when the University was short-changed through ghost workers’ syndrome. All these atrocities and criminal acts were reportedly committed by the embattled ADSU Bursar, Mr. Kumthy Ezra Anjili.

In the past one year, three Vice Chancellors of ADSU, including two former VCs and the current one, were frequent guests of the Anti-corruption Agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC), either in Yola, Gombe or their Headquarters in Abuja. However, the Bursar, Mr. Kumthy Ezra Anjili, who is at the centre of the fraudulent and criminal acts, remained aloof and stayed away from the anti-graft bodies, for whatever reasons. Were it not for the prompt action by crack detectives of ICPC, ADSU might not witness justice for a long time, despite the massive fraud perpetrated in the Ivory Tower.

It is gratifying that the ICPC has now arrested the Bursar so that justice can take its full course and the fraudulent and criminal acts that were persistently perpetrated in the state university would be brought to an end. The expectation now is that the Bursar will explain why he defrauded his employer, where the looted funds are and how the monies so stolen would be repatriated or returned to the coffers of ADSU for the growth and development of the budding Ivory Tower.
