Police Deploys 6000 Officers, Restrict Vehicular Movement Ahead Of Ondo LGA Poll

The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has said no fewer than six thousand of its officers would be deployed for Saturday's Local Government elections.

Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, the State Commissioner for Police, who disclosed this on Friday evening to newsmen during a security tour in Akure, the Ondo State capital, said the officers were to compliment the efforts of other sister security agencies already deployed for the poll. 

Mrs. Ibifuro-Harrison said the officers would be divided into the eighteen local government areas of the State to maintain peace and order at the various polling units where the election is billed to take place.

The police boss averred that the officers of the command are ready to provide adequate security for the life and properties of resident during and after the Saturday Council election.

"I can assure that no fewer than six thousand of our officers would be deployed for the local government election and we have warned our officers against any unethical conduct during the exercise.

"Like I always said, the duty of the police is to provide adequate security for both the life and properties of residents in the State.

"They don't have any business to interfere in the process of the election. Theirs is to ensure there is no violence and the exercise is not disrupted by thugs. So, our officers are ready for a peaceful poll" she said.

She noted that the officers had already been advised on the rules guiding the election stressing that none of the personnel would be compromised during the exercise.

She also warned the political parties participating in the election to cautioned their candidates against perpetrating violence noting that the police was ready to deal with any erring politician caught creating trouble to disrupt the poll. 

Meanwhile, the command has also announced the restriction of movement on Saturday of the local government election.

Femi Joseph, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) made the disclosure in a state broadcast monitored by SaharaReporters correspondent in Akure.

Joseph said there would be restriction of both vehicular and human movement between the hours of 7am and 4pm on the Saturday of the election. 

He added that security agencies would only permit those on essential duties to move around during for proper monitoring of the election.

SaharaReporters reported that the police had postponed a some students entrance examination billed to hold at its command school this Saturday due to the council election in the state. 

The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) had told SaharaReporters that elections would hold in all the eighteen local ‎areas of the state.
