At Least 10 Dead At Istanbul Airport Following Explosions, Gunfire

The Minister of Justice for the Republic of Turkey, Bekir Bozdag, announced that at least ten people died in Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport following reports of explosions. CNN reports that two explosions and gunfire rocked the airport on Tuesday evening.

Local news sources in Turkey reported multiple injuries early on but definitive numbers were not known at that time.

Turkish officials speaking to CNN said that “two suspects blew themselves up” and confirmed that police fired shots at suspects to prevent further violence.

According to The Guardian newspaper, a police spokesperson said that a gunman, “maybe a terrorist”, began shooting at police outside the airport to gain access to the international terminal before blowing himself up.

The Guardian also reported that at least 11 people were killed in a car bombing in central Istanbul earlier this month.

No group has claimed responsibility for this attack at the time of publication.
